Long time Dickson County assistant softball coach Bert Newberry has been named the new head coach after the recent departure of former head coach Shane Buchanan.
"I've coached with Bert for 13 years," said Buchanan. He deserves it. I'm extremely happy for him."
NO STRANGER TO THE PROGRAM
Newberry joined the program in 2003, the year after Dickson County claimed its first state championship. His oldest daughter Taylor (2004) played for her father early on in his career and went on to play at Austin Peay. Newberry's youngest daughter, Kyndall, came into the program in 2005 and played four years for the Lady Cougars.
"I really wanted this position," said Newberry. When I got the call I was elated! My phone has blown up with so many congratulations. Everyone has made me feel very special. Now that the hype has passed, it's time to go to work."
I COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER
So I won't even try. Here's what several former Lady Cougars have to say about the new hire.
"I am very excited to see that Coach Newberry is still at the high school and took the head coaching job. When I heard Coach Buchanan left, I figured the team would lose Coach Bert as well. I think he's perfect for the job. He always knew how to talk to us and he helped me a lot throughout my career." ~Keylee Bell
"He's going to be really good for the team. I loved playing for him for my 4 years. He made it fun and was very involved with the team. He was always there supporting me and helping me. They got a great coach." ~Keely Buchanan
"I am so excited for him and my teammates. Coach Bert is a wonderful man and an even better coach. I know that he will be a positive asset to the future Lady Cougar softball teams. I wish him the very best of luck." ~Kelcie Annis
"Coach Bert was a big part of our success during my career at Dickson County High School. I think he will do great things." ~Brooklin Lee
"Coach Bert has put in a lot of hard work and time for the Dickson County High School softball team. He has played a major role in the success the program has experienced these past few years. Dickson County could not have picked a more respectable, hardworking, dedicated coach to lead the program! I wish Coach Bert the best of luck as the new head coach." ~Payton Grove
"I love Coach Bert. He is an awesome person and coach. He contributed significantly to our success during my four years at DCHS. He will be able to positively motivate and teach this young group of players. I will always remember him as the one person who could keep me calm in high pressure situations. He will do great things as the head coach!" ~Ashley Scott
"I think Coach Bert will be beneficial to the program as head coach because I believe he will work the players harder during the off season. Dickson County lost a legendary coach (Shane Buchanan) but Coach Bert won't have any problems filling those shoes." ~Selena Crafton
"I love Coach Bert. The current and future players are very lucky to have him." ~Allison Pendergrass
"Coach Bert is an amazing person! He's always been encouraging and positive. He's a great role model and I can't imagine a better person for the job!" ~Paige Sensing
"I think if anyone deserves the job, it's Coach Bert. He always great with us and treated us as his own. He's been with the team for a long time. All the current players should feel more comfortable with him as opposed to bringing someone unfamiliar in to take over. I loved him being my coach and I think the younger players coming in are going to love him too. I'm excited to see the friendly competition being Coach Bert and Coach Shane in the coming years." ~MaKray Odom
