Crazy Day in Sports

Crazy days, crazy moments, crazy events happen in sports on a regular basis. Regardless of which side of the fence you sit on, these are crazy, unprecedented times across the globe. Yesterday was one of those days that stood out.

Sports has taken a major hit since all the COVID-19 mess hit earlier in the spring, but yesterday seemed to be another knock out punch.

Following is a list of points that jumped out yesterday:
  • The Ivy League has announced that no fall sports will be played this year. Football is a fall sport. OUCH. The league is considering moving football to the spring of 2021.
  • The Big Ten made the announcement that only conference games will be played this fall. Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren went on to say that the Big Ten may end up canceling ALL sports this fall. I can see the dominoes starting to fall.
  • China has canceled all International Events for the remainder of 2020.
  • Japan (which has already pushed the 2020 Olympics to 2021) now say the 2021 Olympics may be in jeopardy.
  • The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Southeastern Conference (SEC) say that as of now, fall sports will go on as scheduled, but that they are looking into “other” possibilities. This was of course announced after the Ivy League and Big Ten came out. If the “big boys” start making sweeping changes, those changes will continue to filter down. As of now, other conferences are not “rushing” to decide on fall sports.
  • More and more NBA and Major League players are opting out of re-starting the season with their respective teams. Both leagues have started training again with games slated to begin later this month.
  • Major League Soccer has re-started with the MLS is Back Tournament, but Nashville SC, with 9 positive COVID-19 tests, has been withdrawn. Tough year for the first year team from Music City. I believe the future will be bright, but the present, not so much.
  • The NBA’s favorite rookie, Zion Williamson, is in hot water for his season at Duke, and the water appears to be getting hotter. Stay tuned.
  • NBA superstar Joel Embiid wore a hazmat suit on the team flight from Philly to Orlando. It was funny in some ways, shocking in some ways. I wonder if he’ll wear it on the court.
  • Even though it didn’t happen yesterday, the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association (TSSAA) on Wednesday delayed a decision on football and soccer for this fall for Tennessee high schools.
On a positive note, it’s rodeo weekend in Dickson.
