DICKSON, TN-- An entirely new rivalry was created by default with the opening of Burns Middle School back in August. Actually, three new rivalries were created consisting of the other three middle schools in the county. Last night the Burns-Dickson rivalry tipped off on the basketball court.
The first-ever contest between the two schools tipped off at Dickson County High School. The atmosphere was electric and there was a large crowd in attendance.
For obvious reasons this game was on the radar, but my attention was also drawn to the coaching staff at each school. Five of the coaches have been around the game in Dickson County for a long time. I started covering those five coaches (John Bybee, Cody Bybee, Simona Newman, Kyle Schreiber, and Kasie Dean Smith) when they were on the court in middle school.
As far as the actual games were concerned, Dickson came out on top in both the girls and boys game.
In the opener, the Lady Dragons raced out to a 32-0 lead and went on to a 52-5 win. Amy Elliott led Dickson with a game-high 13 and Kaylee Edmisson added 9. Natalie Kimbro (3 pts) and Coralee Grove (2 pts) scored for Burns.
In the boys contest, Josh Cope came off the bench for Dickson and tossed in a game-high 17 points. Burns was able to keep things close until the fourth quarter when the Dragons erupted for 20 points and sealed the win, 47-21. Chance Martin added 14 for Dickson. Malakhi Redman (8 pts) and Barkley Allen (6 pts) led Burns.
This rivalry is only going to grow as the years roll on.
