Despite
his presence in recent weeks on the Tennessee
sideline, head coach Derek Dooley has been a dead man walking. It wasn’t a
matter of if he would be fired, but when. That when is now.
The
official word will come at a 1PM university press conference.
By the
numbers, Dooley’s time in Knoxville
was anything but impressive. The Vols under Dooley had a 15-21 overall record.
0-15 against Top 25 teams. 1-14 in the last 15 SEC games (4-19 overall in the
SEC). Add the
fact that the team is rated as the worst defense in school history and you have
a recipe for disaster.
Tennessee
(4-7, 0-7 SEC) must beat Kentucky
on Saturday to avoid going winless in SEC play for the first time in school
history. Offensive coordinator Jim Chaney will serve as the Vols' interim coach
for the Kentucky
game.
The final
straw came with yesterday’s 41-18 loss to in-state rival Vanderbilt (a game Tennessee lost for only
the second time in the last 30 years). That loss sealed the deal on Tennessee’s third
straight losing season. The last time the Vols had three straight losing
season’s, William Howard Taft was the President (1909-1911).
The
hiring of a new coach will be Tennessee’s
fourth coach in the last six years.
